Whaley reignited their title hopes in emphatic fashion after a convincing 4-0 victory over second placed Barnton on Saturday.

The visitors were blown away be a resurgent Whaley side who didn’t give their opponents an inch in a thoroughly dominant display.

A Bill Sutton brace and further goals from Dan Christie and skipper, Rob Newton ensured that Whaley are still in the hunt for the title with four games to play.

After a lacklustre performance saw John Brogden’s team slump to a miserable defeat against Chealde in their previous outing the hosts started brightly against fellow title contenders Barnton and took the lead after half an hour when Sutton was bundled over in the box allowing him to slot home the resultant penalty.

Newton made it two just before half time when he hooked in a loose ball to notch his second of the season.

Brogden asked for more of the same at the interval and shortly after the restart the home side almost made it three but Ray Dwolitka couldn’t convert Sutton’s through ball.

Barnton struggled to get to grips with Whaley’s fast tempo and found themselves 3-0 down when they failed to clear a throw-in and Sutton turned and lashed the ball past the helpless ‘keeper.

The scoring was completed with ten minutes to go when the impressive Sutton delivered a perfect cross for Christie whose glancing header made it 4-0.

Whaley host another of the league’s title contenders on Saturday as Eagle Sports travel to Horwich Park in another huge game for the club.

The reserves were in action twice over the Easter weekend, turning round a two goal deficit to defeat Cheadle on Saturday with goals from Scorer (2) and Hegarty before thumping Pilkington 6-1 on Easter Monday; Tom Scorer with five whilst Liam Prophett grabbed the other.

Team: Tattersall, Johnson, Newton, Moss, Whelan (Hollister), J Burgess (Bailey), G Burgess, Gregory (Heywood), Sutton, Dwolitka, Christie

Man of the Match: Bill Sutton
