Whaley rounded off an impressive Cheshire League campaign with an emphatic away victory against Greenalls Padgate St Oswalds on Saturday.

Bill Sutton and Dan Christie each grabbed a brace whilst further goals from Rob Newton, George Burgess and Matt Brown completed a resounding victory for the rampant visitors.

It didn’t take Whaley long to get into their stride and they took the lead after ten minutes when Sutton’s free-kick was deflected in at the near post.

Rob Newton doubled the visitor’s lead shortly after; poking the ball home after George Burgess had headed Sutton’s corner into his path.

Whaley continued to expose the frailties in the host's back four throughout the half and Jack Gregory’s sumptuous through-ball found Christie who coolly rounded the ‘keeper before finishing to make it 3-0 after half an hour.

James Tattersall was a spectator for the majority of the game but was called upon to tip a Greenalls’ free-kick over the bar to maintain Whaley’s three goal cushion.

John Brogden’s men grabbed another before the break when Sutton again found the net from a free-kick ensuring the visitors would go into the half-time interval with a handsome 4-0 lead.

The manager called for more of the same in the second period and his players obliged, continuing to outclass their opponents for the remainder of the game.

George Burgess capped a fine individual display with the goal of the game, placing the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box to increase Whaley’s lead to five goals before Gregory and Christie combined again for Whaley’s sixth as the former played in the latter who rifled a left-footed shot passed the ‘keeper to take his tally for the season to 18.

The scoring was completed when the tireless Dwolitka found substitute, Brown with an excellent reverse pass and the winger stabbed the ball home after his initial attempt was well saved.

Whaley remained disciplined to the final whistle and recorded their 14th clean sheet of the season and are now guaranteed a fourth place finish but - depending on the outcome of fixtures yet to be fulfilled - could finish as runners-up in what has been a fantastic season for the club.

The reserves remain on course for the league title after dispatching Daten 5-0 at Horwich Park.  They require four points from their final two games starting with a long trip to Warrington to face Eagle Sports on Thursday night, before completing their season at home to Garswood United on Saturday.
