Whaley Bridge made it two wins out of two on Wednesday night with a 3-1 victory against newly promoted Poynton at Horwich Park.

Following a scoreless first half goals from Jace Broome, Joe Burgess and Bill Sutton, ensured that Whaley take maximum points from their opening two games.

The two sides played out the first half in miserable conditions as driving rain and a greasy surface made controlling the ball a difficult task.

The hosts had the better of the chances in a half of which saw neither ‘keeper tested; James Gemmell’s rasping drive went just wide whilst Matt Brown’s snap shot was hacked clear by the Poynton backline.

Whaley lost Dan Whelan just after the break after the full-back failed to run off an injury sustained jin the first half but the home side took the lead just after the hour mark when Broome met Brown’s excellent free-kick to head his side in front.

It was two shortly afterwards when a good move involving Jack Gregory and George Burgess culminated in a Bill Sutton cross which was headed in by Joe Burgess at the back post.

Manager, John Brogden was eager to see his team go for the jugular and put the tiring visitors to the sword but allowed them back into the game when Andy Simpson finished smartly from the edge of the box to reduce the deficit.

With just over ten minutes to go Whaley made the points safe when Joe Burgess was tripped 25 yards from goal allowing Sutton the opportunity to curl in an excellent free-kick to complete the scoring.

Whaley travel to Rylands on Saturday hoping to make it three wins out of three but under no illusions of the difficulty of the fixture.
