Whaley Bridge came from behind to beat Gamesley 3-1 at Horwich Park on Wednesday evening to continue their excellent start to the season.

A double from the in-form George Burgess either side Jace Broome’s second of the season earned the hosts all three points after Michael Dewhurst had given Gamesley an early lead.

Whaley were slow out of the blocks and failed to get a foot on the ball in the early stages of the game and found themselves a goal behind early on when Dewhurst made a b-line for the goal and finally managed to poke the ball home after a scramble in the six-yard box.

The home side immediately upped their game and levelled soon after when Burgess cut in from the right before beating the keeper’ with a whipped cross-come-shot that sailed into the top corner.

In the ascendency, Whaley pushed for the lead; Ray Dwolitka showed good strength in the box before lashing his shot into the side netting and saw another effort smothered by the goalkeeper.

Joe Burgess and Rob Newton also had opportunities to give Whaley their efforts were saved and scuffed respectively.

As half-time approached Broome latched onto Colin Moss’s measured pass and bundled the ball home from close range as Whaley headed for the changing rooms with a deserved lead.

The home side put in an assured performance in the second half, nullifying the threat of Dewhurst with an organised defensive display and clinched all three points after a moment of brilliance from George Burgess.

Having picked up the ball 30 yards from goal, Burgess danced past three defenders and into the box before smashing the ball past the goalkeeper for his second of the night and fourth goal in as many games.

Whaley are one of three teams on ten points from their opening four games and face another of those sides on Saturday as they make the trip to Warrington to face Eagle Sports.

Team: Tattersall, Whelan, Moss, Newton ©, Brown (Gemmell), Sutton, Gregory (W Bailey), G Burgess, Broome, J Burgess (Christie) Dwolitka
