A solitary goal was enough to end Whaley Bridge’s hopes of a successful cup run at the first hurdle on Saturday as Chris Francis’ second half header settled the tie.

Whaley Bridge’s JB Parker Cup first round tie pitted them against a Garswood side looking for a return to form after three straight league defeats whilst Whaley, winless in their previous five outings, had similar hopes for the game.

Dan Christie had the game’s first real opportunity when he latched onto Jace Broome’s flick but his scuffed shot was cleared off the line by a retreating defender.

Garswood boasted the majority of the possession in the first half but were unable to find a way through the visitor’s resolute back line as Rob Newton put on another stellar display at the heart of Whaley’s defence.

As half-time approached Whaley almost took the lead through an unlikely source as right-back Dan Whelan stole possession high up the pitch before unleashing a dipping drive which went just over the bar as the sides went in level.

The second half saw Garswood take the lead in the tie; Whaley surrendered possession allowing the hosts to break quickly and despite ‘keeper Tattersall parrying their initial effort, Francis was on hand to head into an empty net.

Matt Brown had the opportunity to level the tie after a sweeping move presented the winger with the chance to unleash a shot but he opted instead to square the ball and the move broke down.

The same player lined up a free-kick shortly afterwards and his effort cleared the wall but was wide of the target as the visitors continued to probe.

The game petered out limply as Whaley failed to conjure a goal despite the best efforts of Broome who was tireless in his running.

The final whistle signalled more than an exit from the JB Parker Cup for Whaley who are now winless in their previous six games and have found the net just twice in their previous four games.

Whaley Bridge face Denton at home on Saturday hoping to put right the wrongs of recent weeks.

The reserves were successful in their cup endeavours, running out 2-0 winners as they entertained Rudheath Social.  Dan Turner’s men remain unbeaten after ten games in all competitions this season.
