After a winless September, Whaley Bridge produced a morale boosting victory over Denton Town to end a six-game wait for a victory.

Goals from Bill Sutton, Jace Broome, Dan Christie and Joe Burgess completed the rout as the hosts eased to victory at Horwich Park.

After a lacklustre display against Garswood United in their last outing, Whaley had a point to prove and set about doing so when they took the lead after 15 minutes.  Rob Newton drove at the Denton back line and was tripped allowing Sutton to curl the resulting free-kick over the wall beating the ‘keeper at the near post.

The second came on the half hour mark when Broome cut inside and drove the ball into the bottom corner, doubling his side’s advantage.

The hosts suffered a double injury blow before the break; goal scorer Sutton departed with a serious looking ankle injury before Ray Dwolitka limped off with a sore Achilles.

The second half saw Whaley continue to play at a high tempo and their work was rewarded when Dan Christie notched the third of the game heading home Dan Whelan’s pin-point cross.

Denton thought they had pulled a goal back as a loose ball was struck towards goal but James Tattersall saved with his legs before turning the follow up brilliantly around the post to preserve Whaley’s clean sheet.

The scoring was completed with five minutes to play, Whelan once again playing the role of provider as Joe Burgess latched onto his through ball before calmly slotting the ball home.

After the game manager Jon Brogden praised his side’s return to winning ways.

‘After the last three weeks it’s fantastic to get a win and it breeds confidence for our big game in the Derbyshire Cup next week’.

Next week sees local rivals Chapel Town make the short trip to Horwich Park in the first round of the Derbyshire Cup in what is sure to be a highly competitive encounter.  The Manchester League side come into the tie fresh off their first win of the season, a 3-0 victory over East Manchester.

Meanwhile the reserves played out a six-goal thriller against Billinge; Charlie Lacey with two goals and manager Dan Turner with a third as the points were shared.  Turner’s men remain unbeaten in all competitions.

Team:

Tattersall, Gemmell, Newton, Moss, Whelan, J Burgess, Gregory (G Burgess), Broome, Sutton (Brown), Christie, Dwolitka (J Bailey)

Man of the Match: Joe Burgess
