U16s March On In Cup

Whaley Bridge Under 16s travelled to Torpedo Grove in the cup, and easily disposed of their lower league rivals.

Whaley had all of the early pressure, with the keeper saving well from Jack Howell, who was welcomed back after injury. Ole Madden shot over the bar when it looked easier to score, but it was only a matter of time. With ten minutes gone Madden's pass found Howell, who turned his man and slotted home. Madden again played in Howell, who this time crossed for Connell to score, and in the next attack Connell surged past the Grove full back to make it 3. There were many more chances. including a shot from Alfie Hodges that struck the bar, but Whaley had to wait until the second half for number four. Hodges shot narrowly wide when one on one with the keeper, but he made no mistake when Will McIlveen played in Howell who laid it on a plate for the makeshift centre forward. Hodges went down in the box and was awarded a penalty, but he sliced it off the outside of the post to save the Grove defence further embarrassment. It would not be Whaley Bridge Under 16s without late drama, and the home side were gifted two late consolations. The 4-2 victory was well deserved, and we look forward to the draw for the last 16.
