A late salvo from ten-man Whaley Bridge was not enough to earn a point as they suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Styal on Saturday.

The visitors went away without a share of the spoils despite having taken a first-half lead through Jace Broome.

On a proverbial pudding of a pitch Whaley dominated the opening exchanges; Dan Whelan and Bill Sutton combining well down the right hand side whilst George Burgess wreaked havoc within Styal’s defence with tireless running.

The game’s opening goal came when patient build-up play culminated in a fantastic cross from the right foot of Sutton which allowed Broome to power home a header at the back post.

The hosts looked to respond immediately and they were left feeling aggrieved when a coming together between Colin Moss and Styal’s Scott McGowan didn’t result in a penalty.

The striker found himself in the box again moments later but dragged his shot wide as Whaley took their slender advantage into the break.

Having shown glimpses of the danger he posed to Whaley Bridge in the first half, McGowan sprung into life in the second with a brace which earned the home side all three points.

His first came when he tapped into an empty net after the ball had found its way to him via a scuffed pull back, before he powered home a free-kick from 20 yards having been hauled down by Whelan as he looked to break into the box.

Whaley’s hopes of mounting a comeback were dented when James Tattersall was dismissed for handling the ball outside the area; James Gemmell donned the gloves on his return from a broken toe.

Despite being a man down Whaley piled on the pressure late on but a goal was not forthcoming.  Joe Burgess failed to get a shot away after finding himself in a good position in the box, then Moss dragged his shot agonisingly wide as the clock ticked down.

To add insult to injury on a miserable afternoon for Jon Brogden, Whelan and Burgess each picked up their fifth booking of the season and will serve one game suspensions as a result.

Whaley host unbeaten Linotype Cheadle next weekend.

The reserves snuck past Greenalls Padgate St Oswalds by the odd goal in three; Tom Scorer with a last minute strike to seal a brace and the points for Dan Turner’s side.

Team: Tattersall, Brown, R Newton, Moss, Whelan, J Burgess, Gregory, Broome, Sutton (M Newton), G Burgess, Christie (Gemmell)
