U16s topple league leaders

Whaley Bridge Under 16s played arguably their best football of the season to defeat league leaders Reddish Phoenix.

The Reddish pitch was on the small side, and Whaley took full advantage with some compact passing football. There was a succession of corners and rather wayward shots, but when Reddish did break away they found Alfie Hodges in masterful form at the heart of the Whaley defence. Ole Madden went on several strong runs down the left, and when he cut into the box he fell to the ground under a tentative challenge. The referee pointed to the spot, and Zain Saeed made no mistake to give Whaley the lead. The visitors continued to press, and from another corner Saeed swung the ball into the box. The defence headed backwards, and it hit another Reddish player on its way into the net. Whaley fully deserved their 2 goal half time lead, but Reddish are not top of the league by accident. Whaley started the second half well, but the home side gradually came into it and pulled one back on the hour. Nathan Wild drove across the Reddish box and thundered his shot against the post, then Jack Howell broke through but had his shot blocked. Howell had another chance, and the ball fell to Hodges who headed home. Unfortunately the referee had blown for a rather harsh handball against Howell. Reddish turned the screw into the last five minutes, and won a corner deep into injury time. The ball reached the far post but the chance went over the bar, and Whaley Bridge came away with a 2-1 victory that could still prove to be the launchpad for a promotion push.
