Whaley Bridge survived a late salvo from their opponents to secure a valuable away victory on Saturday.

First half goals from George Burgess and Bill Sutton before a third from Rob Newton were enough to earn Whaley a win which moved them up to sixth in the league.

Whaley made the better start to the game with Jace Broome looking particularly lively as he fired wide and over in the opening ten minutes.

Broome was involved in his team’s opener, delivering a teasing cross which was partially cut out before Burgess tapped in from a couple of yards out.

Burgess played a part in Whaley doubling their advantage when he was tripped just outside the box, affording Sutton the chance to curl home the free-kick for a 2-0 lead.

The hosts came into the game more as the half progressed and Jon Brogden’s men were guilty of conceding a number of free-kicks in dangerous areas but Greenalls failed to test James Tattersall in the Whaley goal.

The second half began in much the same vein as the first had ended, with the home side in the ascendency.  Twice Ellis Houghton broke free down the left but his fist delivery was blocked before he saw his second blazed over by Ben McWilliams.

Whaley added a third against the run of play when Sutton’s corner was bundled in at the back post by skipper Newton to all but seal the three points.

At 3-0 Whaley took their foot off the gas and allowed the home side back into the game; Ben McWilliams reduced the deficit when Whaley failed to deal with a long throw-in.

Greenalls’ throw-ins continued to cause confusion in the Whaley defence and only the linesman’s flag prevented Chris Holroyd’s tap-in making it 3-2.

Greenalls did make it 3-2 with the final kick of the game when Chris Rodgers’ floated effort found its way past Tattersall but it wasn’t enough to prevent the three points going back to Derbyshire.

Team:

Tattersall, Brown, Newton, Moss, Whelan (Wood), J Burgess, Gregory (Melville), Broome, Sutton, G Burgess (Gemmell), Dwolitka

Man of the Match: Jace Broome
