Whaley Bridge recorded back to back wins in the league for the first time since August with an impressive away victory over Garswood United.

A first half own goal gave the visitors something to defend before Ray Dwolitka’s late goal sealed all three points,

Whaley were under no illusions as to the difficulty of the task at hand when they made the 40 mile trip to St Helens on Saturday.  Having already lost there in the cup in September, Jon Brogden’s men were keen to turn the tables as they looked to build on last weekend’s victory over Greenalls.

The combination of a rutted playing surface and the blustery conditions ensured that expansive, flowing football was a rare occurrence as Whaley took the upper hand in the opening stages.

George Burgess had Whaley’s first opportunity as he stooped to head the ball in the box but his effort lacked power and was gathered by the goalkeeper.

Bill Sutton’s whipped deliveries from corners and free-kicks caused Garswood’s defence a multitude of problems as they struggled to cope with the areal threat of Colin Moss who rose well only to head over the bar.

It was the dangerous Sutton who produced the cross for Whaley’s opener after half an hour; his near post corner was met by the goalkeeper who fumbled the ball into his own net to give the visitors the lead.

Garswood did have a chance to level before the break when Danny Clarke stole possession from Rob Newton but couldn’t find a way past James Tattersall who stood up bravely to deny the striker the equaliser.

With Garswood in the ascendency and in the face of a string wind in the second half Whaley were forced to defend manfully as the hosts probed for a way back into the game.

United felt aggrieved when they had a goal chalked off for a foul on Tattersall whilst Chris Francis’ free-kick whistled past the post when it had looked destined for the top corner.

Both of Whaley’s opportunities to double their lead fell to Moss who headed Sutton’s floated corner straight at the goalkeeper before blazing over from Joe Burgess’ cross moments later.

Garswood continued to press and looked to have found a way past Tattersall when a cross looped up of Newton but Dan Whelan was well placed to head off the line and maintain Whaley’s narrow advantage.

With just seconds left Tattersall’s quick thinking caused problems at the back for the hosts when his long kick wasn’t convincingly dealt with and Dwolitka stole in to poke past the goalkeeper to seal the victory.

Whaley are on their travels again next week as the make the long trip to Billinge in the hopes of making it three wins from three.

Meanwhile the reserves lost for only the second time this season falling to a 2-0 home defeat to Cheadle who displace them at the league’s summit.

Team:

Tattersall, Brown, Newton, Moss, Whelan, Gemmell (Melville), Broome, G Burgess, Sutton, J Burgess, Dwolitka

Man of the Match: Colin Moss
