A last minute header from Whaley’s 'tenacious' Jason Broome sealed a well-deserved double for the home team against Knutsford in front of a big Whaley crowd on a glorious spring day at Horwich Park.

Whaley welcomed Scott Dignan back and for much of the first half his league leaders played the better football towards the Taxal End but without creating too much and with Whaley countering on the break.  Ultimately though the visitors did penetrate Whaley’s resolute defence, where Newton & Moss always impress, to go one up through Crellin-Myers after 20 minutes.

Ray Dwolitka levelled the scores within minutes in typical Dwolitka fashion rounding the keeper to slot the ball home. This encouraged the home side to go up a gear and within 10 minutes Broome got the first of his headed brace crashing the ball home in a crowded area.

Knutsford came back to level the score just before half time, a complete miskick resulted in the ball falling nicely to ex Whaley hit-man Lee Morris to blast home from 15 yards giving Tatton no chance.

The second half saw Whaley now gradually start to dominate the open play showing the type of spirit we have come to expect, pressing the opposition more and more as the game went on with chances falling to Matt Brown whose fantastic left foot volley clipped the bar and whose crosss from the left picked out Joe Burgess who just failed to capitalise with his header at the far post.  Knutsford couldn't adjust their game to combat this physical pressure and ultimately fell to Broome's second and Whaley's winner.

All in all a very entertaining afternoon with much to commend but it could all have been so different had Clayton's mobility scooter not come to the rescue! (you had to be there!)

Tattersall; Gemmell; Moss; Newton; Gregory; Sutton; Broome(2); Burgess G; Brown; Dwolitka(1); Burgess J
