Crewe completed the double over Whaley Bridge on Saturday, edging a five-goal thriller at Horwich Park.

Both sides came into the game on the back of impressive victories; Whaley having beaten top-of-the-table Knutsford last time out whilst Crewe demolished Pilkington 12-0 the same weekend.

Striker Simon Everall netted an incredible nine goals in his side’s last outing and he carried on where he left off giving Crewe the lead after 25 minutes when the ball bounced kindly for him after James Tattersall had blocked his initial effort, allowing him to put the ball into an empty net.

Whaley were badly off the pace for the entire first half as the visitors flooded forward at will; Everall had chances to add to his tally but his finishing was contrary to his rich goal scoring form.

Crewe did double their lead before the break when Whaley switched off from a throw-in and Lukasz Synowicz stole in to volley past Tattersall from a tight angle.

Jon Brogden demanded improvement from his players at the break and he got just that as Whaley got themselves back into the game through Matt Brown.

Tom Scorer was bundled over on the edge of the box and Brown’s free-kick beat ‘keeper Burzynski via a helpful deflection.

The hosts continued to press and forced their formally fluid and expansive opponents into mistakes but their two goal cushion was restored in freakish fashion when a free-kick just inside the Whaley half bounced in the box and found its way into the top corner untouched.

Despite this setback Whaley maintained their high tempo and were rewarded for their devilment when the tireless Tom Scorer plundered his way through tackles before squaring for Bill Sutton who applied a simple side-foot finish to reduce the deficit once again.

The home side went in hot pursuit of an equaliser and when Jack Gregory skipped past two Crewe defenders and entered the box it looked like it was in the offing but his effort and the subsequent scramble were thwarted by the visitors.

At the other end, Tattersall’s brilliant one handed save kept Whaley’s hopes of a point alive but when Sutton’s late free-kick was turned round the post it was obvious that a point was just out of reach for Brogden’s battling side as Crewe ran out 3-2 winners.

Whaley’s next game is on Easter Monday when they host Garswood United.

Team:
