Whaley Bridge and Garswood United played out a closely fought stalemate at Horwich Park on Saturday in what was the third meeting of the teams this season.

After a win apiece for either side before Saturday’s clash, all signs pointed to a tight encounter between two teams separated by a single point in the league.

After a goalless first half Danny Clarke’s penalty was cancelled out by Joe Burgess as the points were shared.

There was little in the way of goalmouth action in the opening 45 minutes, Garswood’s Tyler Jefferies coming closest for the visitors but his advances were thwarted by James Tattersall who saved bravely at the winger’s feet.

Whaley toiled in the centre of the park as Garswood took the initiative and began to knock the ball around nicely as Whaley chased shadows on a sweltering High Peak afternoon.

Jack Gregory was replaced be the irrepressible Josh Bailey at the break and he and Jace Broome set about putting a stop to the visitor’s midfield dominance.

The second period was a far more even affair but Garswood were gifted the chance to take the lead when Tattersall missed his kick before tripping Jefferies in the box.

Clarke stepped up and coolly dispatched the penalty, giving his side the lead, leaving the ‘keeper rooted to the spot.

Jon Brogden’s men responded almost immediately when United’s left-back misjudged a high ball, allowing Matt Brown a sight of goal; his effort was parried but the ball fell the Dan Christie who unselfishly squared to Burgess who poked in the leveller.

Garswood looked to restore their lead in rapid fashion and opted to play on when Whaley’s James Gemmell lay injured, only to be denied by an outstanding last-ditch tackle from Dan Whelan.

As the game neared an end Broome was hauled down 25 yards from goal allowing Sutton to line up a trademark free-kick, however his effort clipped the outside of the post with the ‘keeper beaten and the game ended all square.

The reserves fell to a 2-0 defeat away at Eagle Sports on the same day.

Team:

Tattersall, Gemmell, Newton, Moss (Leadbetter), Whelan, Brown, Gregory (Bailey), Broome, Sutton, Christie, J Burgess

Man of the Match: Rob Newton
