All the right players but not necessarily in the right order; nevertheless a great win!

Brogden’s ‘Wednesday’ evening, end of season starting line up at Denton included Josh Bailey at right back and Bill Sutton at centre back respectively - both however looked very comfortable in unfamiliar roles.  Joe Burgess reverted to right midfield and the industrious Tom Scorer came in alongside Ray Dwolitka, back after a lengthy injury spell.  Captain Newton, previously stuck somewhere on the M62, stepped in at half time to replace the injured Moss at centre back.

So it was hardly surprising that Whaley’s game was somewhat disjointed but as we have come to expect the spirit within a physically poweful squad overcame a Denton ‘Wednesday’ line up that on this showing surely shouldn’t be in a relegation battle having recently defeated both Eagle and league leaders Linotype.

An early Sutton 30 yard free kick put the visitors ahead and subsequently for much of the game Denton applied pressure through the middle and particularly down the right flank but without really creating many clear cut chances; anything that got past a resolute defence was dealt with by Tattersall who played his usual highly competent game with sporadic superb reflex saves. And so the pattern of the game was set with Whaley's formidable defence absorbing Denton pressure and breaking out at speed through long cross field balls.

Outnumbered in midfield the manager withdrew Tom Scorer for Gregory midway through the second half and even though Jack didn’t really get into the game the move did even things up.

With just minutes to play Dwolitka on the right latched onto a long cross-field ball, his low, hard cross was met at the far post by bright young substitute Leadbetter to smash a 15 yard left footer into the top corner.

Tattersall; Bailey; Sutton; Moss (Newton 45); Gemmell; Brown; Broome; Burgess G; Burgess J (Leadbetter 65); Dwolitka; Scorer (Gregory 70)

MoM: Bill Sutton
