Dwolitka wins it for Whaley’

A warm sunny evening was the setting for the season opener as Whaley welcomed Poynton to Park Road in a somewhat local derby. There were a number of new additions making their league debuts for Whaley and they fitted in to the system nicely to contribute to a well-deserved victory.

The initial exchanges showed Poynton on top with Whaley taking their time to settle in to the game. Once established Whaley began to terrorise the defence of Poynton with the pace and power of Dwolitka and Burgess upfront. There were a number of opportunities for both strikers before Dwolitka took a ball from a throw in with his back to goal and proceeded to make his was towards the by-line before rifling in a left footed strike from a tight angle after 20 minutes.

This was followed up shortly after by an acrobatic ‘Rivaldo-esque’ effort from Burgess which brought an excellent one handed save from the Poynton keeper. The first half continued with Whaley looking threatening on the attack and solid at the back. Dwolitka hit the post with a beautiful lob that left the keeper stranded after breaking clear from the Poynton defence. As the players went in for the half Whaley perhaps should have led by a greater margin but were happy to go in ahead.

The second half followed the same vein as the first with Whaley’s strikers causing problems for the defence and the dangerous Callum Whelan coming in to the game evermore with his penetrating dribbles down the left. The score remained at 1-0 and with an enforced defensive re shuffle on the hour mark the industrious work of Broome and Butler in the middle was as important as ever. Tattersall was untroubled for much of the game but his distribution was first-rate as always and continually put Whaley on the front foot.

Whaley continued to threaten but couldn’t find the back of the net and the score line stayed the same till the referee blew for time. Overall a good result as Poynton will be competitive all season as they showed last year and a good building block for the season.
