Wonder strike defeats Denton’ The 2nd midweek game of the season was the short trip to Denton and it didn’t seem long ago that Whaley played a midweek fixture here at the end of last season.

Whaley had a strong side out and were looking to put behind them the below par performance at Garswood. They started the game well and put the pressure on Denton with some early chances but failed to register on the score sheet. Sutton (centre half) was delivering some dangerous dead balls and it was from a corner that Whaley got their first. A driven ball to the back post was headed across goal by Brotherton for Dwolitka to volley in and make it 0-1.

A second soon followed when Whaley caught Denton on the counter attack with Dwolitka breaking down the left where he squared to Butler who calmly slotted in past the helpless keeper to make it 2. Denton worked hard in the middle and kept the ball well but couldn’t find the final ball to cut open the makeshift defence. More chances went begging before the half time whistle blew but Whaley were good value for their lead.

The second half continued with Whaley dominating through the high tempo play of the ‘Burgess Brothers’ playing down either flank. It was the older of the two that added to the scoreline just after the hour mark with a speculative effort from 35 yards that left the keeper sprawling as it hit the underside of the bar and found the net, a wonderful goal! After this strike Whaley let their guard down and the Denton right winger hit the byline and pulled back for the striker to cooly finish past defence and keeper.

As the game began to move into its final stages an accurately struck ball from Tattersall found the glowing Burgess on the left wing where he controlled well as the ball dropped over the full backs head before proceeding to prance round two defenders and smash the ball home to make it 1-4. An unfortunate injury for Broome in the first half left a sour note to the victory for the away side.

For his composure at the back and excellent ball striking that caused the opposition problems Man of the Match – Bill Sutton

Starting Line-up – Tattersall, Bailey, Sutton, Brotherton, Hampson, Broome, Butler, Gregory, G Burgess, J Burgess, Dwolitka. Subs – Golpin, Jackson, Turner
