Poynton Punished

After no football since the beginning of November, Whaley Bridge Under 17s continued their winning ways with a well deserved victory at Poynton.

Both teams started with attacking intent, but it was Whaley who had the first chances with Zain Saeed firing in a corner that was headed just over by Jack Howell, then Saeed shot straight at the keeper. Nathan Wild shot wide from the edge of the box, and Whaley's frustration was mounting. Hamaad Chaudhry came on but he didn't last long. He reacted to a lunging tackle, and both players were shown a red. Fortunately, half time came to calm things down. Whaley were in the ascendance from the start of the second period, with Howell wasting a number of good chances. The visitors had a series of corners, and from one of these Saeed found Ole Madden who headed his first goal for a couple of years. Whaley were rampant, with Howell doubling the lead, followed soon after by his second and Whaley's third as he collected a rebound off the keeper. Kieran Connell had a golden opportunity but shot wide, and it was left to Poynton to finish off the scoring. First Ethan Williams crossed for a Poynton defender to slice into his own net, then the home side got a late consolation to take the final score to 4-1. Whaley are on a roll, albeit one that has had an eleven week pause, and there is now the opportunity to push on towards the league title.
