Fixtures between Whaley Bridge and Marple are always competitive, and the Whaley Under 18s side have come off second best too often for comfort in recent seasons. This early season clash gave the Bridge a chance to lay down a marker in their trip to a sodden Brabyns Park (so whats new?), and they started on the front foot. They swarmed forward and created a few half chances, before winning a corner on the right. Zain Saeed, welcomed back for his first appearance of the season, swung the ball into the danger area, where Ole Madden attacked it. His bullet header was unstoppable, and it seemed that the floodgates were about to open. Jack Howell and Hamaad Chaudhry linked up well, but the final ball was lacking on a difficult pitch. Bruce Glover had three chances, but none of them found the net, with the Marple keeper in outstanding form. At the other end Will McIlveen and Alfie Hodges marshalled the defence well, and the home side were restricted to a few long range efforts. 1-0 at the break, and Whaley were immediately on the front foot in the second half. New boy Aaron Chapman pushed forward, and Ethan Williams looked a threat down the left. Marple forced a series of corners, but Whaley dealt with them well, and their pace on the counter always threatened a second. With twenty minutes left Howell found space in the box. His shot wasn't the best, but it took a huge deflection which wrong footed the keeper and found the bottom corner. Whaley were cruising, and in the dying seconds Chaudhry almost made it three with a shot that went just wide. Overall it was a satisfactory 2-0 win that retains the 100% record going into the trip to Weston Rangers next week.
