Whaley started nervously and failed to play the sharp passing game they had worked on during pre-season.

Fairfield had great aerial presence in their rear guard with Damian Rae dominating and Whaley struggled initially, however, following 2 Nadin headed goals being disallowed  a clever low driven free kick on 35 minutes by Jackson into the Fairfield Box was poked into the net by Jack Howell at the near post.  Fairfield played some good football and had chances but failed to beat Lloyd who had a great first half coming off his line well.

Following the half time break Whaley settled and quickly started to play the ball around much better, a through ball between the Fairfield back line was once again dispatched by Jack Howell for his second of the game.  The score remained this way until 70 minutes when the Fairfield striker beat the offside trap and lofted the ball over an advancing Lloyd to make it 2-1.

A period of Fairfield pressure followed and an equaliser looked inevitable, another disallowed Whaley goal added to the uncertainty but a firm Whaley header won in the middle of the pitch put Howell through on goal, calmly lofting the ball over the Fairfield keeper for his hattrick and Whaley's third.

With 5 minutes to go Jack and George Howell combined well on the left and the ball was squared unselfishly to Ben Jackson who remained composed slotting the ball in from close range.

This wasn't Whaley's finest performance but 4-1 win in their opening league fixture was both hard fought and well earned. Man of the match was Jack Howell.

Squad: Lloyd, Tailby, Greaves, Golpin, Waterhouse, Furmston, Wilson (c), Jackson B (1), Connell, Howell J (3), Nadin, Roberts, Campbell, Longden, Marner, Howell G.
