With only several minutes on the clock Whaley’s current inform player Broome played Jack Kelly in on goal; he was tripped inside Denton’s box and the referee had no option but to award Whaley a penalty, Sutton having returned to regain his penalty responsibilities duly scored past White to make it 0-1.

Whaley had a ten minute burst in which chances were missed that otherwise might have dented Denton’s confidence, however with a sigh of relief Denton began to take control of the game with some neat and tidy pass and move combinations instigated by T Bane & D Hewitt. Whaley’s management had to make several adjustments to the team’s shape in order to help keep the visitors in the game; Sam Leadbetter who had been causing problems down Denton’s right hand side was shifted to left back so that Broome could try to get a grip of the midfield battle.

Although the majority of Denton’s good work was in the middle third of the pitch they were getting closer as the half went on and on 35 minutes thought they had equalised with a long range effort that was glanced in by Salmon but it was ruled offside; Salmon was stood off side directly in front of Tattersall so it remained 0-1 to Whaley at half time.

At the break the visitors again moved things around and took the game to Denton putting pressure on their back four and closing down space more effectively than in the first half. However, having just got back into the game Whaley were punished for losing their shape, a Bennet shot was well saved by Tattersall but ball rebounded to the edge of the box where Salmon drilled a powerful shot into the far right corner.

Denton were now applying the pressure again and Whaley’s defence were working tirelessly to keep them out until a Whaley counter attack saw a Joe Burgess shot tipped just wide by White and then from the subsequent corner Kelly also headed just wide from close range. Some good play by Joe Burgess again down the left picked out Kelly who swivelled left then right and managed to side foot his shot into White’s far left corner to make it 2-1.

Then soon after Jack Kelly more good work down the right hand side, beating two defenders he squared his cross to the advancing Gilbride who tapped in for 3rd and knockout blow to Denton; White’s frustration at this point got the better of him and he was red carded. Whaley saw out the final minutes to rescue three points against a good strong Denton side.
