Derbyshire Divisional Cup North 2nd Round

Leadbetter bags 7 in much awaited local derby! These two teams haven’t met for 7 years; not since Whaley, having dominated the HVFL for some years, made the decision to move up into the Step 7 CFL following the 2010/11 season. So it was with some anticipation that a large crowd gathered to see what was anticipated to be a close (ish) nostalgic encounter between two old local rivals. But it didn’t turn out that way, after 10 minutes or so of sparring the home side took the lead and then went on to control the game but to their credit Dove did create chances on the break throughout and never capitulated even grabbing a well worked consolation on the break on 68 minutes.

In chronological order :-

20 mins 1-0: George Langford met a Leadbetter cross from the left to guide the ball home

25 mins 2-0: Bill Sutton’s back post header made it two

33 mins 3-0: Leadbetter reacted first following his header that rebounded back off the keeper

37 mins 4-0: Tattersall long ball headed on by Sutton for Leadbetter to run onto a slide past the advancing keeper

43 mins 5-0: Leadbetter put through to complete his hatrick.

After the break the home side took the opportunity to introduce a couple of lads from its Development Squad. Captain Bill Sutton, this week playing up-front with Jamie Kay coming back in at centre back, and George Langford making way for Dillon Roberts (17) and Dan Connell (17).

58 mins: 6-0 Skillful work down the right by O’Donnell produced a fine cross headed home by Leadbetter

65 mins: 7-0 Ditto O’Donnell but this time down the right for Leadbetter to again head home

68 mins: 7-1 Dove get a consolation, breaking down the left to tap in from a cross

83 mins: 8-1 Another fine O’Donnell cross and another Leadbetter header and a second hatrick

85 mins: 9-1 Leadbetter grabs his 7th and final goal of the day

88 mins:10-1 Dillon Roberts put through on the right carried the ball 30 yards through towards goal before hitting it into the far corner

So it's back to the bread and butter league duties next week with a visit from mid-table Padgate St Oswalds but this proved to be a good opportunity to continue to rebuild in this period of transition with the home side finishing the game with 7 players all aged 21 or under.

MoM Sam Leadbetter with 7 goals

Tattersall; Bailey; Toseland; Kay; Gemmell; Drayson; Langford; Gregory; O’Donnell; Sutton; Leadbetter
