The Under 11s suffered a shock defeat at home to Hollingworth on a day when all other fixtures at the Park Road ground were called off due to frozen pitches.
Whaley started brightly, but both sets of players struggled to stay upright on a frozen pitch. It was questionable weather (ooh!) the game should have been on, but with the growing backlog of fixtures both teams, and the referee, agreed to play. Alfie Hodges had the home side's best chance of the first half when his looping shot came back off the woodwork and landed in the arms of the 'keeper. Hollingworth looked dangerous on the break, and it was one such cavalry charge that saw them take the lead, a lead that they held on to until half time. The second half started the same way. Whaley had much of the possession, but Hollingworth had pace up front. Another breakaway saw a second strike for the visitors, and from there it was an uphill struggle for Whaley. Man Of The Match Kieran Connell tried to drive the team forward, and Nathan Wild struck the woodwork for the second time, but once again Whaley were caught on the break for 3-0. There could have been late drama when Bruce Glover's cross was put just wide by Ole Madden, but Hollingworth left with a three goal victory. Whaley will have to improve next week, when they travel to title challenging Mountfield Rovers |
