Under 11s In Richmond Stalemate

Whaley Bridge Under 11s had to settle for a draw at Richmond Rovers.

Having beaten Richmond 8-0 three weeks earlier, Whaley should have been confident for the corresponding away fixture. Unfortunately Richmond were much more up for it and dominated the early possession. Some poor defending on the right led to a snap shot that 'keeper Daniel Lomas could only parry, leaving the Richmond striker with a simple tap in. It was the first goal conceded by Whaley in over 200 minutes of football, and it could have got worse very quickly as Lomas was forced into a number of saves. Whaley won a number of corners with little success, and at half time Ben Williams was had to give a stern team talk. This seemed to do the trick as Whaley pressed Richmond back in the second half. Alfie Hodges dominated, with Ole Madden and Ethan Williams combining well down the left. Joint men of the match Daniel Burt and Bruce Glover finally sorted out the defence, and Whaley got the goal their play deserved as Hodges went on a mazy run into the box. His cool finish brought the scores level, and Nathan Wild and Jack Kitchin both had chances to win it late on. In the end a 1-1 scoreline was fair, with Whaley maintaining their chance of a top four finish.
