The club held (what is hoped to be the first of many) two 6-a-side tournaments on the 17th & 24th June for the Under 11 and Under 9 age groups and both days were a success.
The Under 11’s took the stage on the 17th and competition was strong with clubs represented across the first 3 divisions of the Stockport Metro League. Unfortunately Whaley did not make it through to the semi-finals but the acquitted themselves admirably against tough opposition (especially as they fielded a few players from the Under 10 age group).
The eventual final was between Inter Macc and Reddish Villa with Inter Macc thoroughly deserving their victory. Special mention though goes to Reddish who very sportsmanlike with their guard of honour for the winners as they picked up their trophy.
The second weekend was the turn of the Under 9’s and despite the weather taking a turn for the worse, supporters again turned out in force. There were some excellent games throughout the day and this time Whaley made it through to the knockout stages. Whaley (again using some under age players to make up the numbers) played High Lane and the other semi was contested between Chapel and Cheadle Heath with High Lane reaching the final against Cheadle. In a tightly fought final, High Lane came out eventual winners and took home the tournament trophy.
Across the two days there was some excellent football played and some highly competitive games (a tribute to all the teams and managers involved).
Special mention should go to the following;
Ros, Jo, Charlotte and Chris who kept everyone fed and watered over the two days
Dan Campbell, Jonathan Burt and Anthony Dranfield for refereeing
The Committee members for their support & assistance.
ROLL ON NEXT YEAR!!
