County Crumble

Whaley Bridge Under 17s secured a vital win in a testy game against Great Moor County.

Whaley were missing Zain Saeed and Bruce Glover, and the squad was further stretched when Harry Hunt failed a fitness test just before kick off. The Whaley Bridge home pitch was tricky, with large amounts of cut grass hampering play. Whaley started brightly, and deservedly took the lead when Kieran Connell turned and shot from the edge of the box. The rest of the first half was characterised by late challenges and some cynical fouls, and stand in referee Johnny Burt did well to keep it under control. Great Moor came out with much more determination after the break, and they levelled thanks to some hesitation in the Whaley Bridge defence. They took the lead with a great footballing move, and could have extended this but for an acrobatic goalline clearance form Ole Madden. Whaley pressed forward, with Hamaad Chaudhry and Jack Howell both spurning good chances, whilst a succession of free kicks from Chaudhry and Alfie Hodges failed to beat the solid Great Moor keeper. The tackles became edgier and it was perhaps inevitable when Whaley were awarded a penalty after Connell was brought down. Connell stepped up to take it and smashed the ball into the bottom corner. The visitors were living on the edge, and when Whaley were awarded a second penalty for handball tempers frayed, and Great Moor were reduced to ten men. Connell again converted for his hattrick, and Whaley controlled the ball for the few minutes that remained. It was a hard fought 3-2 victory with a number of players sustaining injury, and we will have to wait to see what the patched up squad looks like for next week's trip to Stockport Vikings Warriors.
