U9's - Mini-Soccer Tournament success!
Written by John Hind

Sunday May 9th
Under 9's Junior team travelled to Cheadle Hulme for Inter Cheadle's annual soccer tournament to round off their first season of Mini-Soccer and returned with the Winners Trophy.
With the game played in two divisions of 6 teams, they lost only once in the 5 game group stages to finish top of the division and earn a place in the Quarter Finals. No game had had more than 1 goal in it and this continued into the Quarters with tough opposition in Spurley Hey 'B' . The boys kept the passing game going well and through hard work throughout the team, ran out 1-0 winners (Dan)  to gain a place in the Semi’s, against........Spurley Hey ‘A’ !! Another tough game (their 7th) and a goal in each half of normal time (Richard first for Whaley) and a 1-1 draw. A lob from Richard beating the ’keeper and crossing the line just after the ref blew time. No further score in 3 minutes of extra time and into a penalty shoot-out ! Whaley emerging victorious after Spurley failed to convert 2, a great save from Jonah and  a confident finish for our last penalty from Richard and Whaley were through to the final 5-3 !
A last team change and the boys ran out for their 8th and final game winning the tournament with an own goal in the first half (Sam’s shot touched on by Dan and the ball deflecting in off the ‘keeper) and a really great passing move from left to right and back for Richard to finish and Whaley to run out 2-0 winners !! Well done boys.

A great team performance boys, excellent support once again from parents, friends, relatives (not forgetting our Chairman – thanks Dean and Dan, much appreciated) and very rewarding for Adam and I.

.....Not forgetting that the U8’s travelled with us for their first taste of Mini-Soccer and we mean first taste ! Bearing in mind that most of the lads have only been playing 3 weeks and have not taken part in any Mini-Soccer at all as yet, they competed well in all of their group games and put points on the board. They didn’t manage to qualify on this occasion but by the look on their faces, when they came to tell me about Tyler’s spectacular goal, at the end, they no doubt had a great time and enjoyed their football. A great early experience before their first season, starting in September ! Thanks again for everyone’s support and to Sarah and Matthew ‘Baldy’ for your help in taking on the Coach’s job.

Buxton Town's Mind Games?

Buxton Town's website suggests they are in disarray leading up to the Hope Valley Premier League title decider (8 May 2010) due to injuries, weddings and military duties.

Maybe they're just kidding?
